Frequently Asked Questions About International Arrivals & COVID-19 Testing

Day 2 & 8 Testing Package

Q. What should I do before travelling to the UK?

All UK international arrivals travelling from countries which are not “red list” countries which have a travel ban, must do the following:

  • Book a Day 2 PCR or Day 2 lateral flow test, if you are fully vaccinated by an approved vaccination programme or if you are a child aged 5-17 who is resident in the UK or in a country with an approved proof of vaccination
  • Book the Day 2 and Day 8 travel testing package if you are not fully vaccinated by an approved vaccination programme. The Day 2 and Day 8 package includes 2 COVID-19 PCR tests; one to be taken on or before Day 2, and another on or after Day 8 of quarantine. Your date of arrival is “Day 0”.
  • Obtain the booking reference number for your Day 2 test, or your Day 2 and Day 8 testing package, which must be provided on your passenger locator form before travelling to England
  • Quarantine for 10 days since arrival in the UK if you’re not fully vaccinated and had to purchase a Day 2 and Day 8 testing package
  • Follow the national social distancing rules in the UK
  • You must follow separate guidance if you’ve been in a country where travel to the UK is banned. These countries are on the ‘red list’. See the red list countries.

There is further information on the government website on Travelling to England From Another Country During the Coronavirus Pandemic. Please read the guidance and note that the rules may be different if you are travelling from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Q. How can I book my Day 2 test, or a Day 2 and Day 8 testing package?

You can book the Day 2 test or the Day 2 & 8 travel testing package with us by calling us on +44(0)203 370 4034 or booking with us online. The Day 2 PCR test is £140.00 GBP, and the Day 2 and Day 8 package price is £270.00 GBP for both tests. Both tests can be self-administered, by following the instructions provided.

You should book and pay for your Day 2 test or your Day 2 and 8 travel testing package before travelling to England, as you will need to provide a booking reference on your passenger locator form. The Day 2 & 8 tests are PCR tests for COVID-19 and you must do these even if you are not exiting quarantine. The tests will be provided for you to do yourself, and you simply send them back to the lab using the provided postage envelope pack and prepaid Tracked 24 label. You need to post your sample in any Priority Postbox found across the UK. Find your nearest Priority Postbox by following this link. These Day 2 and Day 8 COVID-19 PCR tests do not allow you to shorten your quarantine period. You can only shorten your quarantine period if you book a Day 5 “Test to Release” COVID-19 PCR test with us here.

Q. Can I shorten my 10-day quarantine period with Day 2 and 8 testing?

No. These COVID-19 tests for the Day 2 and Day 8 travel package do not allow you to shorten your quarantine period even if your test results are negative. You can only shorten your quarantine period if you book a “Test to Release” COVID-19 PCR test with us here to take 5 full days after arriving in the UK. If this test result is negative, you no longer need to quarantine. You can only opt in for “Test to Release” if you are arriving from a non-red list country.

Q. Is the "Test to Release" scheme compulsory if I am doing Day 2 and 8 testing?

No, only the Day 2 and 8 travel testing package is compulsory, however these tests do not allow you to reduce your quarantine period. You can opt in for Test to Release, if you would like to reduce your quarantine period. The first test must be taken on or before Day 2 of quarantine, and the second test must be taken on or after Day 8 of quarantine. We will provide your Day 2 test ready for your arrival in the UK, but you cannot receive your second test until Day 8. Even if you do both Day 2 and Day 8 COVID-19 PCR tests, and both are negative, you still must complete 10 days of quarantine as an international arrival.

Q. Do I still have to take the Day 8 test if I do my "Test to Release" test on Day 5 and have ended quarantine?

Yes, you still have to do the Day 8 COVID-19 PCR test, as the Day 2 and 8 COVID-19 testing is compulsory. You still have to do the Day 8 test even if your COVID-19 test from Day 5 (“Test to Release”) is negative, and you end quarantine early.

Q. When do I take the Day 2 and Day 8 COVID-19 tests?

Your date of arrival in England is considered Day 0. The next day is Day 1. You must take the Day 2 COVID-19 PCR test on or before Day 2, and the Day 8 COVID-19 PCR test on or after Day 8. The COVID-19 PCR test for “Test to Release” should be taken on Day 5 after five fully days of arriving in England – simply put, no earlier than 120 hours after the time you arrived in England.

Q. I am fully vaccinated for COVID-19. What do I need to do?

If you are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by an approved vaccination programme, are you are arriving in the UK, we’ll provide you with a Day 2 PCR test or you can book a Day 2 lateral flow test (if you are arriving in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland). Passengers arriving in the UK from non-red list countries who are fully vaccinated do not need to quarantine upon arrival, but they still need to take a Day 2 test for surveillance purposes.

Q. I am arriving in England and I am not fully vaccinated, but I travel back before my Day 8 test. What should I do?

In this case, the current advice to most passengers has been that you can travel back sooner and do not need to do the Day 8 PCR test. However, the rules are changing frequently, so please check the government website and email dhsctesttrace.customerfeedbackteam@nhs.net if there are a set of circumstances that are not explained on the government website.
